Australian Citizenship Test · Study Guide

Australian Values

The core values every Australian citizen shares — the Rule of Law, equality, freedom, the fair go and peaceful democracy.

**Australian values** are at the heart of what it means to be Australian. All five questions on Australian values in the citizenship test must be answered correctly to pass. **The values that Australians share:** **Respect** Australians respect the dignity and freedom of every individual. We treat others fairly and with respect, regardless of their background, beliefs or lifestyle. **Freedom** Australia is a free country. Australians value freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of association and freedom of movement. These freedoms are balanced with the responsibility to obey the law. **The rule of law and equality** All people in Australia are equal under the law. No person, group or institution — including the government — is above the law. Everyone must obey the law. **Parliamentary democracy** Australians value the right to vote and have a say in how the country is governed. Citizens vote to choose their representatives, who must be accountable to the people. **A 'fair go'** Australians believe in equal opportunity — the idea that what you achieve in life should depend on your talents, work and effort, rather than your background, wealth or connections. Everyone deserves a fair chance. **Compassion and a 'mateship'** Australians value compassion for those in need and the spirit of helping others — sometimes called 'mateship'. This includes supporting neighbours in times of trouble, volunteering, and looking out for fellow Australians. **English as the national language** English is Australia's national language and an important part of national identity. Migrants are encouraged to learn and use English to participate fully in Australian society. **Loyalty to Australia** Citizens pledge their loyalty to Australia and its people. This means putting Australia's interests first and upholding Australian values and laws.
